Does Melatonin Work?

Melatonin supplements are growing in popularity, as more people understand how much it can help them sleep at night. Our body produces it naturally which is how we start to feel sleepy at night but some people use supplements as a way to help them get longer sleeps or when they’re feeling restless. A big question that always pops up is if there are any effects that happen to our body when we take melatonin.

According to Healthline, poor sleep affects roughly around 50-7 million Americans. This means there are so many people out there that get less then their needed amount of sleep. This is why a lot of people go to melatonin to help them get a better night sleep.

So what is melatonin? This is a hormone that is produced by the pineal gland in the brain. Not only that but it can also be found in the eyes, bone marrow, and gut. It’s called the sleep hormone because our body releases it when we experience nighttime. That is how we start to feel sleepy enough to fall asleep. There are good benefits that you can get from it like:

  • Easing tinnitus symptoms
  • Treats stomach ulcers and heartburn

Other than that, are there any bad health problems that can come from you taking melatonin? Let’s find out. One of the biggest concerns is the sleepiness that it does bring. You can’t really call it a side effect because it’s what they’re intended for but it should be taken with caution. It would be hard to perform your regular activities once you have taken melatonin because the fatigue may become undesirable.

Another concern is the interaction with any other medication. You should speak with your doctor when you want to take melatonin because there are times where you can’t mix it with other medication. Of course this only applies if you are actually taking medication like antidepressants for one.

There are studies that say melatonin is fairly safe to take with minimal effects. It’s a good thing to go to your doctor and explain why you want to take them to begin with.
