How Much Do You Need Calcium?

How Much Do You Need Calcium?

You’ve probably heard your parents tell you to drink your milk multiple times so that you can build strong and healthy bones. This is all because of Calcium. It is one of the most important nutrients for your bone health throughout your life. Other than the fact that it’s in your glass of milk, what else do you really know about it?

How much do you need it? What a lot of people don’t know is that it’s the most abundant mineral in the body. Not only that but it does a lot more than just strengthen your bones and teeth. Yes, it’s well known for strengthening your bones but that’s just because most of it is stored there. Our bones go through a process where they break down and remodel. The Calcium in them helps rebuild it.

This happens a lot when you are growing and developing. This is why it’s so important to be taking in the right amount of this nutrient for your body. While it’s important in the younger years, as you get older it also plays a huge part in your body. When you begin to age, your bones become more brittle and weak. If you don’t take enough Calcium they can become easily fractured. This is a condition called Osteoporosis.

Out of the bones, about 1% of it is found in the blood and vessels. Because of this, it takes on many different roles that are important to the function of our body like:

  • Hormone Release
  • Blood Clotting
  • Muscle Contraction
  • Nerve Signal Transmission
  • Blood Vessel Function

So how do you need calcium? It’s hard to really say because it all depends on your age and gender. According to the National Institutes of Health, from years 1-3, it’s recommended to get about 700 mg but from years 71+ you should be getting around 1,200 mg. It’s important to get together with your healthcare provider to make sure exactly how much Calcium your body needs. Getting more than the recommended amount can bring on risks of side effects so just like it’s important not to be deficient, it’s also important not to get too much.

Getting your daily dose of Calcium shouldn’t be hard because you can find it in so many different sources. Some of them include milk, cheese and even yogurt. If you’re lactose intolerant don’t feel left out. There is still a way for you to be able to get nutrients from dairy by just choosing lactose free options. If this seems like a stretch for you there are also dairy free options to get your daily intake. They include Salmon, Orange Juice, and even Calcium rich breakfast cereal.

So now that you know how important calcium is for the body, there are also different ways to acquire this. Supplements are very popular among people but another option is IV Therapy. We serve an IV Cocktail that is packed with Calcium for your body! It’s called the Myer’s Cocktail. It is one of our most popular services and has so many benefits. Other than getting a bunch of calcium, it can also help with anxiety, fatigue, and even migraines.

To hear more or even book an appointment, call us at The IV Lounge. Our registered nurses and physicians will be able to answer any questions you may have.
