The Best Of B12: Why Methylcobalamin Matters

Not all B12 is the same. So you should choose your version wisely.

You’re likely familiar with the B vitamins, especially B12. Did you know that there are actually different versions of the same vitamin that you could be taking? What if we told you that one type is actually superior to the other? You may want to make sure the version you choose is the best one.

Which B12 is Which?

Much like other vitamins, your body doesn’t naturally produce its own supply of B12, also known as cobalamin. So you have to take it in from outside sources like food, supplements, or intramuscular (IM) shots. This is especially true if you follow a vegan nutrition plan or are a more active person. The IM shot is the most effective method due to its high absorption rate when compared to other ways. If you opt to have a B12 IM shot, there are two popular forms that you could be injected with. They are hydroxycobalamin and methylcobalamin.

Hydroxycobalamin, also produced under the name hydroxocobalamin, is the less expensive version which makes it more appealing initially. However, it has an issue that comes with it. Not everyone can use this version because their bodies can’t methylate it. It’s actually believed that up to 1 in every 4 people wouldn’t be able to benefit from this version. So in essence, it would be a completely useless shot. So what would be the point in taking something that has a 25% chance of not being beneficial to you?

Methylcobalamin is the version that you may find in supplement form and the food you eat according to ROOTD. The IM shot version has actually been rising in popularity as opposed to hydroxycobalamin. Since it’s already methylated, any person would be able to retain it within their bodies. That means they can use it and reap all of the benefits it offers, including red blood cell production, energy boosts and lifting of “brain fog.” The cost of Methylcobalamin is slightly higher, but the ability to actually use it and the benefits it offers makes the extra investment a much better choice.
